PoJK Protesters Warn Islamabad
Political unrest in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir intensified after the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Islamabad, warning of a major protest action on July 9 if its demands are not met.
PoJK Protesters Issue Ultimatum To Islamabad
The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee said its ongoing sit-in protest will continue until its demands are fulfilled. The group has called on residents across PoJK and members of the Kashmiri diaspora to join the July 9 protest.
The ultimatum comes amid growing anger over alleged police action, arrests and restrictions imposed during the latest phase of protests. Demonstrations have been reported in several areas, including Muzaffarabad, where clashes and shelling were also reported.
JAAC Demands Release Of Detained Leaders
Protest organisers have alleged that more than 600 civil rights activists, political workers and leaders have been detained. They have demanded the immediate release of those arrested, restoration of communication services and an end to restrictions on public movement.
The protesters are also demanding uninterrupted supply of food, flour, medicines and other essential items. They have accused authorities of imposing an economic blockade by restricting key supplies to the region.
PoJK Unrest Linked To 38-Point Agreement
The JAAC has also demanded implementation of a 38-point written agreement that was earlier discussed with authorities. The committee says the agreement covered political, economic and basic rights-related concerns of residents in the region.
The unrest has grown after Pakistan reportedly banned the JAAC under anti-terror laws. The July 9 call has raised concerns of further escalation if Islamabad does not respond to the protesters’ demands within the deadline.
