PM Modi, Trump Discuss Trade and Strategic Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described his latest telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump as “productive”, with both leaders reviewing India-US cooperation across trade, defence, energy and critical technologies amid ongoing negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and agreed to maintain close engagement.
Their discussion covered cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas of mutual interest. Modi and Trump also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including efforts aimed at promoting global peace and security.
The conversation comes at a sensitive stage in bilateral ties, with trade negotiations continuing alongside differences over Washington’s tariff policies linked to India’s purchase of Russian energy.
India-US Trade Deal Talks Continue
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is visiting the United States from September 29 to October 5 as New Delhi seeks progress on an interim trade arrangement and a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement.
Negotiations have continued for several months, with India seeking what it describes as a balanced and mutually beneficial agreement.
The two countries are also discussing market access, tariffs and ways to expand bilateral investment and trade.
Defence, Energy and Technology Remain Key Areas
Despite differences on trade and Russia-related sanctions, India and the United States continue to expand strategic cooperation in defence, energy and emerging technologies.
Both Modi and Trump agreed to remain in contact as negotiations and wider strategic discussions continue.
The latest conversation signals that both governments intend to sustain high-level engagement while working through unresolved economic and geopolitical issues.
