PM Modi Expects ‘Meaningful’ Talks at BRICS Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed confidence that the BRICS Summit in New Delhi will produce positive and meaningful discussions on major global issues, as leaders from the expanded grouping arrive in India for the two-day meeting beginning Saturday.
Modi Highlights Global Welfare Ahead of BRICS Summit
Ahead of the summit, Modi invoked a Sanskrit verse centred on well-being and prosperity while welcoming world leaders to India.
The Prime Minister said he was confident that discussions during the gathering would reflect a shared aspiration for global welfare and produce constructive engagement on issues affecting countries around the world.
India is hosting the September 12-13 summit as BRICS faces a rapidly changing geopolitical and economic environment marked by conflicts, trade tensions, technological disruption and pressure for reform of international institutions.
BRICS Leaders Gather in New Delhi
The summit will bring together leaders from the expanded BRICS grouping, which has grown beyond its original membership of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
India has positioned its 2026 BRICS presidency around practical cooperation, resilience, innovation, sustainability and the priorities of the Global South.
Trade, security, technology, energy, development finance and reform of multilateral institutions are expected to feature prominently during the leaders’ discussions.
Modi-Putin Bilateral Ahead of Summit
Before the formal summit begins, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi on Friday.
The meeting is expected to cover India-Russia strategic cooperation, including trade, energy, defence and international developments.
Other bilateral meetings involving visiting BRICS leaders are also expected around the summit as New Delhi uses the gathering to advance both multilateral cooperation and key diplomatic relationships.
