Novo Nordisk Launches Ozempic in India

Global pharmaceutical major Novo Nordisk has launched its blockbuster diabetes drug Ozempic in India, expanding access to one of the world’s most widely prescribed treatments for type 2 diabetes. The once-weekly injectable medication is now available across the country following regulatory approvals.

Dosage and Pricing Details

Ozempic will be sold in a pre-filled injection pen and offered in multiple dose strengths of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and 1 mg. The introductory 0.25 mg dose, which is typically used during the initial treatment phase, is priced at around ₹2,200 per week. Each pen contains four weekly doses. Higher doses will cost more depending on the prescribed strength.

Drug Benefits and Medical Use

Ozempic is designed to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone that regulates insulin secretion and appetite. Apart from glucose control, the drug has shown benefits in weight reduction and has been linked to improved cardiovascular outcomes in high-risk patients. While widely known for weight loss benefits globally, its approved use in India remains focused on diabetes management.

India’s Rising Diabetes Burden

India is among the countries with the highest number of people living with type 2 diabetes, driven by lifestyle changes and rising obesity levels. The launch of Ozempic adds to the range of advanced therapies available for long-term disease management, though cost may limit accessibility for some patients.
