Nirmala Sitharaman Hails Indian Bureaucracy as World-Class

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has praised the Indian bureaucracy as “one of the finest in the world,” highlighting its role in executing governance with dedication and precision. Speaking at an official function in Tamil Nadu, Sitharaman underlined the efficiency, commitment, and ethical conduct of India’s civil servants as the cornerstone of national administration.

She applauded bureaucrats for their resilience, particularly during critical periods like the COVID-19 pandemic, when they worked relentlessly to implement emergency measures and ensure the delivery of essential services across the country. According to her, their response during crises has demonstrated both administrative strength and human empathy.

Sitharaman emphasized the importance of continuous professional development within the bureaucracy. In an age marked by rapid technological change, she urged civil servants to remain agile and well-informed, encouraging them to adapt to evolving global standards and digital governance practices.

Stressing the importance of integrity and transparency, she noted that public confidence in government institutions relies heavily on the moral uprightness of those in service. Ethical governance, she said, was not just a regulatory requirement but a moral imperative for a democratic nation like India.

She further noted that India’s bureaucrats are often acknowledged internationally for their administrative abilities, with many even serving key roles in global institutions. Their training, she remarked, equips them with the analytical and practical tools necessary to manage complex governance challenges.

Concluding her address, Sitharaman expressed confidence that India’s civil services will continue to be a bulwark of stability and innovation in public administration. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering bureaucrats and ensuring that their working conditions, training infrastructure, and institutional support match global standards.
