NEET-UG Computer-Based Test Under Review
The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that shifting NEET-UG from its existing pen-and-paper format to computer-based testing is under active consideration. However, no final decision has been taken, and any transition will follow consultations with stakeholders.
NEET-UG Computer-Based Test Proposal
In a compliance affidavit filed before the Supreme Court, the Centre said the National Testing Agency has already moved several major entrance examinations to computer-based testing. NEET-UG remains in pen-and-paper mode because of the examination’s scale and the need to ensure accessibility for candidates across India.
The government is examining whether NEET-UG can adopt a computer-based format similar to the Joint Entrance Examination. A phased transition involving a two-stage examination model is also among the options being considered.
Nandan Nilekani Panel Reviewing NEET Reforms
A final decision will be taken after the government receives recommendations from a high-powered task force chaired by Infosys co-founder and former UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani. The panel has been asked to review examination security, logistics, cybersecurity and data protection.
The task force also includes former ISRO chairman S. Somanath, former Intelligence Bureau director Tapan Deka and IIT Madras director V. Kamakoti. Candidates will receive adequate notice before any major change to the NEET-UG examination format is introduced.
Centre Details NEET Exam Security Measures
The affidavit was submitted in proceedings concerning reforms to the National Testing Agency following controversies surrounding NEET-UG. The Supreme Court had asked the Centre to explain how improvements in examination administration would be institutionalised.
The government said it had introduced a multi-layered security system to protect national entrance examinations. It also highlighted tougher legal provisions against paper leaks, impersonation, tampering with examination systems and other unfair practices. The proposed reforms are intended to improve transparency and preserve the integrity of future NEET-UG examinations.
