Musk Claims Starlink India Launch Is Being Blocked
Elon Musk has accused unnamed Indian “oligarchs” of delaying Starlink’s commercial launch in India to protect their dominance in the telecom market, while the government has rejected the allegation and said all satellite operators are being treated under the same regulatory framework.
Musk Says Starlink Is Being Blocked in India
Musk made the allegation while responding to a discussion about gaps in high-speed internet access in parts of rural India.
He said Starlink could provide affordable broadband to areas where conventional fibre and mobile networks remain difficult or costly to deploy.
Musk did not identify the companies or individuals he was referring to. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are among India’s largest telecom operators and are also pursuing satellite broadband services.
India Rejects Claims of Regulatory Bias
The government said its satellite communications policy is fair and non-discriminatory and rejected suggestions that Starlink is being deliberately held back.
Three satellite service providers, including Starlink, have received telecom licences and are undergoing security assessments before they can seek spectrum allocation.
Officials said all three operators are broadly at the same regulatory stage.
Starlink Builds 20 Gateway Sites in India
Starlink says it has already established 20 gateway sites containing hundreds of antennas across India and developed India-specific security controls.
The company has also committed to keeping Indian user data within the country as part of its compliance arrangements.
Commercial operations cannot begin until final security requirements are completed and spectrum is assigned.
The dispute highlights the growing competition surrounding India’s satellite broadband market as Starlink, Jio and Airtel-backed services prepare for commercial launches.
