Marco Rubio to Visit India for Energy, Trade Talks

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit India as part of a diplomatic tour scheduled from October 17 to 22, 2026, focusing on energy cooperation, strategic relations and commercial investment. The visit will include stops in Mumbai and Jamnagar, Gujarat, as Washington and New Delhi seek to strengthen bilateral engagement amid evolving geopolitical and economic challenges.

Marco Rubio’s India Visit to Focus on Energy Cooperation

The US Department of State confirmed that Rubio will meet senior Indian government officials to discuss regional and global developments, strengthen the India-US strategic partnership and explore opportunities for expanded energy cooperation.

The visit to Jamnagar, a major centre of India’s petroleum refining industry, places energy cooperation prominently on the diplomatic agenda.

Rubio is also scheduled to meet business leaders to explore commercial investment opportunities and expand economic cooperation between the two countries.

India-US Strategic Partnership Gains Diplomatic Momentum

The visit follows renewed high-level diplomatic engagement between India and the United States.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor recently disclosed that PM Modi and President Trump had spoken the previous week, indicating continued communication between the two governments.

Gor also highlighted bilateral cooperation in defence, information technology and healthcare, alongside military exercises and cross-border investment.

This will be Rubio’s second official visit to India in 2026, following his May visit.

Rubio to Attend Central Asia Summit Before India

Before arriving in India, Rubio will travel to Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to participate in the C5+1 Ministerial meeting.

The discussions will involve representatives from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan, focusing on regional security, economic development and strategic cooperation.

A US commercial delegation comprising more than 200 business leaders will accompany the Central Asian leg of the visit.

The diplomatic tour reflects Washington’s efforts to expand economic and strategic engagement across South and Central Asia.
