Mali Attacks Hit Bamako And Key Cities
Mali witnessed a serious security escalation on Saturday after gunfire and explosions were reported in the capital Bamako and several other cities, with armed groups targeting military sites and key infrastructure.
Mali Attacks Target Bamako And Airport
Heavy gunfire and blasts were reported near Bamako’s main military areas, including locations close to the Modibo Keita International Airport. The airport was temporarily affected as security forces responded to the attacks.
Mali’s army said unidentified armed groups had targeted barracks and other locations in the capital. It later claimed that the situation in Bamako had been brought under control, though reports from other cities suggested wider unrest.
Defence Minister’s Residence Reportedly Targeted
One of the most serious incidents was reported in Kati, a military town near Bamako. The residence of Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara was reportedly targeted during the violence. Some reports said the property was damaged, while officials indicated that the minister was safe.
Attacks were also reported in Gao, Kidal, Mopti and Sevare, pointing to a coordinated assault across several strategic locations. Armed groups linked to long-running insurgencies in Mali are suspected to be involved, though full confirmation remains awaited.
Mali Security Crisis Deepens
The violence comes as Mali continues to battle jihadist groups and separatist factions that have destabilised the country for years. The military-led government has repeatedly claimed progress against armed groups, but Saturday’s attacks show that major security threats remain.
Foreign missions, including the United States and India, issued alerts to their citizens following the violence. The fresh unrest has raised concerns about the stability of Mali’s junta-led government and the wider security situation across the Sahel region.
