JD Vance Warns Iran Deal Will Be Messy
US Vice-President JD Vance has warned that negotiations with Iran are likely to be difficult and time-consuming, saying any agreement would emerge through a “messy” diplomatic process. His remarks come as the Trump administration pushes for an end to the conflict and a broader settlement with Tehran.
JD Vance Warns Iran Talks Will Be Difficult
Vance said Iran’s political system contains competing factions with sharply different views about continuing the conflict. He described dealing with Tehran as extraordinarily difficult because some elements favour ending the war while others want fighting to continue.
The Vice-President said Washington’s challenge was to navigate these divisions while securing an outcome that protects American interests.
US Plans Diplomatic and Economic Pressure
Vance said the United States would continue using diplomatic, economic and military pressure as negotiations develop.
He cautioned against expecting an immediate breakthrough, saying discussions were still unfolding and it was too early to determine the final outcome.
Vance said the administration ultimately expects Iran to be prevented from obtaining a nuclear weapon while global oil prices decline as regional tensions ease.
Trump Optimistic About Iran Agreement
President Donald Trump has sounded more optimistic about the diplomatic process, saying significant progress has been made and suggesting an agreement could emerge soon.
The negotiations come amid continuing uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.
Iran has also been negotiating with Oman over arrangements governing commercial traffic through the strait. However, Tehran has repeatedly disputed claims that it is currently engaged in direct peace negotiations with Washington.
