Iran Walkout Strains US Talks In Switzerland
Iranian officials briefly stayed away from direct talks with the United States in Switzerland after President Donald Trump warned of tougher action against Tehran. Negotiations, however, continued through mediators, with both sides still discussing a broader roadmap to reduce tensions.
US Iran Switzerland Talks Face Setback
The first round of high-level talks between U.S. and Iranian officials in Switzerland was marked by tension after Trump repeated his warning that Iran would be hit “harder” if it did not rein in its allies in Lebanon.
Iranian media reported that Tehran’s delegation refused to return to the direct negotiating room after the remarks became public. However, U.S. officials said the Iranian side remained at the venue and discussions continued indirectly through Qatari and Pakistani mediators.
Iran Delegation Walkout Over Trump Threat
The dispute came as the two sides were discussing implementation of a recent understanding aimed at extending a ceasefire framework and moving towards a final agreement within 60 days.
Talks included Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, frozen assets, Lebanon hostilities and maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has demanded progress on oil export waivers and asset releases before moving into deeper nuclear negotiations.
Strait Of Hormuz And Lebanon Remain Key Issues
The Strait of Hormuz remained a central point of disagreement. Iran has linked its position on maritime traffic to continuing violence in Lebanon, where Hezbollah and Israel remain locked in hostilities.
Mediators said both sides had agreed to continue technical discussions through the week. The talks are expected to focus on de-escalation mechanisms, commercial shipping safety and steps towards a longer-term diplomatic settlement.
The episode shows that the negotiations remain fragile, with military threats and diplomatic efforts moving side by side.
