Iranian officials briefly stayed away from direct talks with the United States in Switzerland after President Donald Trump warned of tougher action against Tehran. Iran has demanded progress on oil export waivers and asset releases before moving into deeper nuclear negotiations. Iran has linked its position on maritime traffic to continuing violence in Lebanon, where Hezbollah and Israel remain locked in hostilities. Mediators said both sides had agreed to continue technical discussions through the week. The talks are expected to focus on de-escalation mechanisms, commercial shipping safety and steps towards a longer-term diplomatic settlement. The episode shows that the negotiations remain fragile, with military threats and diplomatic efforts moving side by side.
