Iran Buries Ayatollah Khamenei In Mashhad
Iran buried its late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad on Thursday, bringing a week of mass funeral processions and mourning ceremonies to a close amid renewed conflict with the United States.
Khamenei Buried In Mashhad Shrine
Khamenei’s body was carried through crowded streets in Mashhad before being taken to the Imam Reza shrine, one of Iran’s holiest religious sites.
Thousands of mourners dressed in black gathered for the burial, waving Iranian flags and holding placards with revolutionary slogans. The funeral followed processions in Tehran, Qom and the Iraqi shrine cities of Najaf and Karbala.
The ceremonies were promoted by Iran’s clerical leadership as a major moment of national mourning and political mobilisation.
Mojtaba Khamenei Remains Out Of Public View
The burial also came as attention remained focused on Mojtaba Khamenei, who has been declared his father’s successor but has not appeared publicly since the strike that killed the former Supreme Leader.
Reports said Mojtaba suffered serious injuries in the same attack and has so far issued only written statements. Iranian authorities have not released any recent public image, video or voice recording of him.
His absence has added uncertainty at a sensitive moment for Iran’s leadership.
Iran Funeral Held Amid US Tensions
The funeral took place as tensions between Iran and the United States rose again after weeks of temporary calm.
Crowds in Mashhad chanted slogans against US President Donald Trump, while Iranian officials continued to blame Washington and its allies for Khamenei’s death.
The developments come at a critical time for Iran, which is dealing with war damage, economic pressure and internal political challenges after nearly four decades of Khamenei’s rule.
