India-Sri Lanka ODI Likely to Move Out of Delhi

The opening One-Day International between India and Sri Lanka, scheduled for December 13, 2026, is likely to be shifted from Delhi due to concerns over deteriorating air quality and ongoing renovation work at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has reportedly requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to relocate the match, although an official decision has yet to be announced.

DDCA Cites Delhi Air Pollution and Stadium Renovation

The DDCA is understood to have informed the BCCI that hosting the match in December could present difficulties because of the capital’s winter pollution levels.

Delhi recorded an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of approximately 351 in December last year, with similarly poor conditions observed on November 2.

The Arun Jaitley Stadium is also undergoing renovation, raising concerns about its readiness to host an international fixture.

However, air pollution is understood to be the primary reason behind the relocation request.

India-Sri Lanka 2017 Test Raises Health Concerns

The DDCA’s concerns are partly linked to the December 2017 Test between India and Sri Lanka in Delhi, when several Sri Lankan players experienced respiratory difficulties amid severe pollution.

Some players wore protective masks, while others reportedly became physically unwell during the match.

The association is understood to be seeking another international fixture next year if the December ODI is relocated.

BCCI Yet to Confirm New ODI Venue

The three-match ODI series is currently scheduled to begin in Delhi on December 13, followed by matches in Bengaluru on December 16 and Ahmedabad on December 19.

On October 12, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed earlier reports suggesting that the Delhi match had already been moved to Ahmedabad.

The latest request from the DDCA could now require the cricket board to reconsider the schedule.

No replacement venue has been officially confirmed.
