Renewable Energy Shielded India From Iran War: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said India’s investments in renewable energy over the past decade helped protect its economy from the impact of the West Asia conflict. Addressing the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on November 2, 2026, Modi argued that India’s dependence on imported fossil fuels would have exposed the economy to significantly greater disruption without its expanding clean energy capacity.
Modi Links Energy Security to Economic Stability
The Prime Minister said the ongoing conflict had demonstrated the close relationship between energy security and economic resilience.
He maintained that countries heavily dependent on fossil fuel imports remained vulnerable to international supply disruptions and price fluctuations.
Modi said India’s economic growth had remained strong despite the crisis, crediting long-term investments in renewable energy with helping cushion its impact.
India Nears 300 GW Non-Fossil Energy Capacity
Modi highlighted that India’s installed non-fossil power capacity had approached 300 gigawatts, accounting for more than half of the country’s total electricity generation capacity.
He reaffirmed India’s target of reaching 500 GW of installed non-fossil capacity by 2030.
The Prime Minister said more than Rs 15 lakh crore had been invested in India’s clean energy sector over the past decade, including approximately Rs 6 lakh crore during the previous two years.
He projected investment opportunities exceeding Rs 20 lakh crore by 2030 across renewable generation, transmission infrastructure, manufacturing and energy storage.
PM Modi Calls for Solar Cooking and Electric Vehicles
Modi urged Indian startups and technology developers to create affordable cooking solutions powered by rooftop solar energy, reducing household dependence on imported cooking gas.
He also encouraged greater adoption of electric vehicles charged using electricity generated from residential solar installations.
Highlighting PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and PM-KUSUM, Modi called on farmers to install solar panels on unused agricultural land and field boundaries.
He said farmers could become energy producers alongside their traditional agricultural activities, strengthening rural incomes and India’s long-term energy independence.
