India Sends Request For 114 Rafale Jets

India has sent a formal Letter of Request to France for the proposed procurement of 114 Rafale fighter jets for the Indian Air Force, with technology transfer, local manufacturing and Indian weapon integration expected to be key parts of the negotiations.

India France Rafale Jet Deal

The proposed acquisition of 114 Rafale jets is being pursued through a government-to-government framework. A Letter of Request is the formal step used to begin detailed talks under an intergovernmental agreement.

The deal is expected to be one of India’s largest fighter aircraft procurement programmes. It comes as the Indian Air Force works to modernise its fleet and address squadron strength concerns.

Rafale Technology Transfer Assurances

France has reportedly assured India on technology transfer and local production support for the proposed Rafale acquisition. The aircraft are expected to be procured under the Make in India framework, with Dassault Aviation partnering with an Indian firm.

India has also sought clear provisions on indigenous content, maintenance support and long-term domestic capability building. These conditions are expected to be central to the final agreement.

Indian Weapons Integration On Rafale

A major focus of the negotiations is the integration of Indian weapons and systems on the Rafale platform. India has pushed for the ability to integrate indigenous missiles, data links and other locally developed systems.

The proposal is significant because it could reduce dependence on foreign weapon packages and improve operational flexibility for the Indian Air Force. Final terms, cost and delivery timelines will depend on the outcome of negotiations between India and France.
