Antonio Guterres to Attend BRICS Summit in India
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will participate in the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi later this month, adding further diplomatic weight to India’s 2026 chairship of the grouping. The summit will be held on September 12 and 13 at Bharat Mandapam.

Guterres’s participation was indicated by his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a UN press briefing, with a formal announcement expected closer to the summit.
The UN chief is expected to engage with leaders from BRICS member states, partner countries and other invited nations during the two-day gathering.
Potential bilateral meetings involving Guterres and major world leaders attending the summit have not yet been formally announced.
India Hosts 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13
India assumed the BRICS chairship for the fourth time on January 1, 2026, having previously held the role in 2012, 2016 and 2021.
The theme of India’s chairship is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, reflecting New Delhi’s focus on strengthening cooperation among emerging economies.
The 2026 summit also coincides with the 20th anniversary of BRICS, which has expanded significantly beyond its original five-member structure.
Global Leaders Expected at New Delhi BRICS Meet
The summit is expected to bring together leaders from major economies including Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are among the leaders expected to participate, although individual travel plans remain subject to formal confirmation.
Discussions are likely to cover global governance reform, economic cooperation, artificial intelligence, sustainable development, trade, geopolitical conflicts and strengthening the role of the Global South.
