India May Raise Ethanol Blending To 25%
India may soon increase ethanol blending in petrol from 20% to 25% as part of a wider push to reduce crude oil imports, strengthen energy security and expand the use of cleaner transport fuels.
India Plans Higher Ethanol Blending In Petrol
The government is reportedly considering a calibrated move towards 25% ethanol-blended petrol. The proposal comes after India achieved its E20 target and made 20% ethanol-blended petrol available nationwide.
Ethanol blending is seen as a key part of India’s fuel diversification strategy, as it reduces dependence on imported crude oil and supports domestic biofuel production.
E25 Petrol And Vehicle Compatibility
The shift to E25 is expected to be implemented gradually because higher ethanol content can affect older vehicles that were not designed for such blends.
Newer vehicles are being prepared for higher ethanol compatibility, while flex-fuel vehicles are also being promoted. Consumers may need to check whether their vehicles are compatible with higher ethanol blends once a formal rollout plan is announced.
Ethanol Push Linked To Energy Security
The move is also linked to rising concerns over global crude oil supply risks, especially amid tensions in West Asia. A higher ethanol blend could help India reduce oil import pressure and shield the economy from sudden fuel price shocks.
At the same time, the expansion of ethanol blending will require steady feedstock supply, better storage infrastructure and coordination with automobile manufacturers. The government is also focusing on refining capacity, strategic petroleum reserves, biofuels, hydrogen and renewable energy as part of its long-term energy transition plan.
