India Fifth-Largest Military Spender In 2025
India was the world’s fifth-largest military spender in 2025, with defence expenditure rising to $92.1 billion, according to the latest SIPRI data. The increase came amid higher global military spending and continuing security concerns in Asia.
India Defence Spending Reaches $92.1 Billion
India’s military expenditure rose by 8.9% in 2025, placing it behind the United States, China, Russia and Germany in global rankings.
The increase reflected India’s continued focus on military modernisation, operational readiness and defence preparedness. The rise also came after Operation Sindoor, when the armed forces carried out emergency procurements to stay battle-ready following tensions with Pakistan.
Pakistan Ranks 31st In Military Spending
Pakistan was ranked 31st among the countries listed, with military spending rising by 11% to $11.9 billion in 2025.
SIPRI data said Pakistan’s increase was linked to fresh aircraft and missile orders from China after its conflict with India, along with payments for earlier procurement contracts. Despite the rise, India’s defence spending remained nearly eight times higher than Pakistan’s.
China Remains Asia’s Biggest Defence Spender
China remained the world’s second-largest military spender, with its expenditure rising by 7.4% to $336 billion. This was China’s 31st straight annual increase, reflecting its long-term military modernisation drive.
The wider Asia and Oceania region saw military spending rise by 8.1% to $681 billion, showing how regional security tensions are pushing countries to expand defence budgets.
Global Military Spending Continues To Rise
Global military expenditure reached $2.89 trillion in 2025, marking the 11th consecutive year of growth. SIPRI said the rise was driven by conflicts, geopolitical tensions and higher defence commitments across Europe and Asia.
