India Faces 100% US Tariff Risk Over Russian Oil Purchase
The United States Senate has advanced a bipartisan sanctions Bill that could expose India and other major buyers of Russian energy to tariffs of up to 100%. The measure seeks to reduce Moscow’s energy revenues and increase pressure over the continuing war in Ukraine.
US Senate Advances Russia Sanctions Bill
The Senate voted 86-12 to move the legislation forward. However, the procedural vote does not mean the Bill has become law.
The proposal must clear further stages in the Senate before being considered by the House of Representatives. It would then require presidential approval before its provisions could be implemented.
The legislation is designed to strengthen economic pressure on Russia by targeting both Moscow and countries that continue substantial energy trade with it.
India Faces Potential 100% Tariffs
The Bill would authorise the US President to impose tariffs of up to 100% on imports from countries purchasing significant quantities of Russian oil, natural gas and other energy products.
India and China could be among the countries affected because of their continuing energy imports from Russia. Other countries may also fall within the Bill’s scope depending on the scale of their purchases and how the provisions are applied.
The proposed tariffs would not be automatic. The President would retain discretion over their implementation, with possible exemptions or waivers under specified circumstances.
Sanctions Target Russian Energy Revenue
The legislation also seeks to expand sanctions against Russian officials, financial institutions, oligarchs and entities accused of helping Moscow evade existing restrictions.
Supporters argue that targeting buyers of Russian energy would weaken a major source of revenue for the Russian government. Critics warn that broad tariffs could disrupt global energy markets, increase import costs and create diplomatic friction with US partners.
India has consistently defended its Russian energy purchases as necessary for maintaining affordable and reliable domestic supplies.
