The US Central Command described the launches as an attempted surprise attack carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The missiles were fired towards an American military installation in Jordan.
Air defence systems intercepted the barrage before the missiles could reach their intended target. American forces across the region were subsequently placed on heightened alert amid concerns that additional attacks could follow.
The specific US military base targeted in the strike was not immediately identified publicly.
Attack Ends Brief US-Iran Military Pause
The missile barrage marked Iran’s first direct ballistic missile attack on a US base since President Donald Trump paused strikes against Tehran to allow diplomatic efforts to continue.
The temporary pause followed nearly two weeks of military confrontation involving American strikes on Iranian targets and retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran.
The latest incident has raised doubts about whether negotiations aimed at reducing hostilities and resolving disputes surrounding the Strait of Hormuz can continue without another major military escalation.
Regional Conflict Risks Further Escalation
The attack coincided with coordinated US and Saudi strikes against Iran-aligned armed groups operating in Iraq.
American officials said the targeted groups had been directed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to attack US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure. The attempted attacks against American personnel were described as unsuccessful.
The renewed exchanges have increased fears of a wider regional conflict involving Iran, the United States, Saudi Arabia and armed groups operating across Iraq and Yemen.
