India Engaging Russia, Ukraine to Help End War – EAM Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said India is holding detailed discussions with both Russia and Ukraine to explore ideas that could help reduce hostilities and ultimately bring the war to an end, reaffirming New Delhi’s emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy.
India Holds Talks With Russia and Ukraine
Speaking in Warsaw after meeting Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, Jaishankar said India was examining whether suggestions emerging from its engagements with Moscow and Kyiv could contribute to mitigating or ending the conflict.
His remarks followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek on August 31 and Jaishankar’s subsequent visit to Kyiv, where he held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Jaishankar did not indicate that India had presented a specific peace proposal, but said discussions with both sides were detailed and focused on possible approaches towards ending the fighting.
Jaishankar Says Peace Requires Negotiations
The External Affairs Minister reiterated India’s long-standing position that the Russia-Ukraine war cannot be resolved through economic or trade measures alone.
He said the central issue was the conflict itself and that a lasting solution would have to emerge through negotiations. India, he added, was prepared to provide assistance wherever it could contribute meaningfully to peace efforts.
New Delhi has maintained relations with both Moscow and Kyiv throughout the war while repeatedly calling for diplomacy.
Modi Reiterates Dialogue and Diplomacy
During his meeting with Putin in Bishkek, Modi again stressed that dialogue and diplomacy remained the way forward for resolving international conflicts.
India has stopped short of announcing an independent ceasefire framework, maintaining that the primary responsibility for ending the war rests with Russia and Ukraine. However, Jaishankar said India would continue supporting efforts by different countries and exploring avenues that could help facilitate a cessation of hostilities.
