India Ends Boarding Pass Stamping From Sept 1
International passengers departing from Indian airports will no longer need their boarding passes stamped at immigration counters from September 1, 2026, as authorities move to simplify and digitise departure procedures. Travellers will be able to present electronic boarding passes on their smartphones, while physical boarding passes will continue to be accepted without stamping.
India Ends Boarding Pass Stamping From September 1
The Bureau of Immigration, which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has communicated the change to international airports and relevant security agencies across the country.
The decision removes the mandatory requirement for immigration officials to stamp physical boarding passes during departure clearance. The existing system could cause inconvenience to passengers, while poorly placed or unclear stamps occasionally made boarding passes difficult to read.
E-Boarding Passes Accepted at Immigration
From September 1, international passengers can show an e-boarding pass on their smartphone while completing immigration formalities. Travellers carrying printed boarding passes can continue using them, but immigration authorities will no longer stamp those documents.
The change applies across international airports in India and is intended to reduce reliance on paper-based procedures while making departure formalities more efficient.
The Central Industrial Security Force had already discontinued boarding pass stamping during security checks several years ago for both domestic and international passengers.
Passport Stamping Changes Also Under Review
Authorities are also considering a pilot project that could eventually eliminate immigration entry and exit stamps in passports held by Indian citizens.
The proposed system is expected to undergo testing before any wider rollout. If implemented nationally, it would mark another step towards digitising immigration records and reducing manual documentation during international travel.
