Gautam Gambhir Backs Three-Match Test Series
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has called for three-match Test series to become the preferred format, arguing that two-Test contests leave teams with little opportunity to recover after losing the opening match.
Gautam Gambhir Backs Three-Test Series
Gambhir said a three-Test contest gives the side losing the opener a genuine opportunity to respond and still win the series. In a two-match series, defeat in the first Test generally means the best possible outcome for that team is a drawn series.
He pointed to India’s famous 2001 home series against Australia as an example of how a longer contest can allow momentum to shift. India lost the opening Test before winning the next two matches to claim the series 2-1.
Gambhir Unconcerned by Short Test Turnarounds
Gambhir also played down concerns over shorter recovery periods between Tests, saying professional cricketers are accustomed to demanding schedules.
He said team management can use optional training sessions, workload management and recovery programmes to ensure players remain physically prepared during closely scheduled Test matches.
India Coach Wants Young Players Given Time
Gambhir also stressed the importance of giving emerging players sufficient opportunities before judging their performances.
He said young cricketers should not be assessed on the basis of one or two matches and argued that sustained opportunities are necessary to determine whether they can succeed consistently at international level.
The India coach added that stronger competition for places within the squad can improve overall standards and help the team build greater depth as it continues developing its Test setup.
