India has crossed more than five lakh organ donation pledges, marking a major milestone in public participation for organ and tissue donation. The Health Ministry said the achievement reflects growing awareness and citizen commitment towards saving lives through voluntary donation.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said the country has recorded more than five lakh organ donation pledges. It described the milestone as a sign of increasing public recognition of organ donation as a life-saving act that can offer hope to patients waiting for transplantation.
Organ donation pledges allow individuals to express their willingness to donate organs or tissues after death. While a pledge itself is not the same as an actual donation, it plays an important role in building awareness and encouraging families to support the decision when required.
Organ And Tissue Donation Awareness Grows
The Health Ministry said the milestone reflects the progress made through sustained government efforts to promote voluntary organ and tissue donation. Awareness campaigns have focused on encouraging informed participation and social responsibility among citizens.
India continues to face a significant gap between the number of patients waiting for transplants and the availability of donated organs. Officials have repeatedly emphasised the need for greater public awareness, timely consent and stronger coordination between hospitals and transplant networks.

Dr. Anil Kumar, Director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization, thanked citizens across the country for supporting the organ donation movement. He also acknowledged the role of State governments and Union Territory administrations in helping achieve the pledge milestone.
The development is being seen as an important step towards creating a stronger culture of voluntary organ donation in India.
