India’s US LPG Imports To Cross 1 Million Tonnes
India’s LPG imports from the United States are expected to cross 1 million metric tonnes in June, marking a record monthly level as refiners move to secure cooking gas supplies amid disruption in traditional Middle East supply routes.
India LPG Imports From US Hit Record
India is set to import more than 1 million metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas from the U.S. in June, the highest monthly volume recorded so far.
The sharp rise comes as supply disruptions in the Middle East forced Indian buyers to look for alternative cargoes. The U.S. has emerged as a major replacement source despite higher freight costs and longer shipping routes.
India relies heavily on imported LPG to meet domestic cooking gas demand. A large portion of those imports usually comes from West Asia, making any disruption in the region a direct concern for household fuel availability.
Middle East Supply Disruption Drives Shift
The recent disruption in supplies through the Strait of Hormuz pushed Indian companies to increase spot purchases from the U.S. to maintain uninterrupted domestic supply.
Imports from traditional suppliers had fallen earlier during the crisis, before recovering in May. However, Indian refiners continued securing additional U.S. cargoes for June to reduce the risk of shortages.
The purchases also reflect India’s effort to diversify energy sourcing during periods of geopolitical volatility.
Domestic LPG Supply Remains Priority
The government has asked refiners to boost local LPG production and prioritise household supply. Steps have also been taken to manage demand and speed up alternative fuel availability, including piped gas expansion in some areas.
With supplies from the Middle East expected to improve gradually, pressure on LPG imports may ease in the coming months. However, the June surge shows how quickly India’s energy sourcing pattern can shift during a regional supply shock.
