India Achieves Record Defence Exports of ₹21,000 Crore
India’s defence exports have reached a historic milestone, surpassing ₹21,000 crore over the past decade. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted this achievement, attributing it to the government’s proactive policies and the growing competitiveness of India’s defence manufacturing sector on the global stage.
Milestone Reflects Policy Success
During an official address, Rajnath Singh emphasized the transformative journey of India’s defence industry, which has evolved from being a predominantly import-dependent sector to one that increasingly contributes to global arms exports. “The export figures underscore the success of the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, which have encouraged indigenous defence manufacturing and innovation,” he said.
The Defence Minister noted that key export markets for India include countries in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The products range from advanced weapon systems to equipment like radars, patrol vessels, and ammunition, which cater to a wide variety of defence requirements worldwide.
Policy Reforms Drive Growth
The government’s introduction of reforms, such as streamlined defence procurement procedures, enhanced private sector participation, and tax incentives for exporters, has contributed significantly to this success. Additionally, India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and private sector manufacturers have played pivotal roles in meeting global standards of quality and reliability.
Global Impact of Indian Defence Products
India’s defence exports have gained recognition for their affordability and quality, making them highly competitive in international markets. Some of the notable items include BrahMos supersonic missiles, coastal surveillance systems, and advanced light helicopters, which have garnered attention for their performance and cost-effectiveness.
The ₹21,000 crore figure marks a significant step in India’s vision to position itself among the world’s top defence exporters. Rajnath Singh reiterated that India aims to achieve annual defence exports of ₹35,000 crore by 2025, further cementing its role in the global arms trade.
