Several of the vulnerable lakes are located in high-altitude areas of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and other Himalayan districts where access and continuous monitoring remain difficult. Early Warning Systems Planned at Four Lakes The state government plans to install early-warning systems at four high-risk glacial lakes as an initial priority. These systems are expected to include automated monitoring equipment capable of tracking water levels, weather conditions and other indicators that may signal an increased risk of sudden flooding. Alerts could then be transmitted to downstream communities and disaster-management authorities, giving residents more time to evacuate if conditions deteriorate. Himalayan Glacier Risks Draw Greater Attention Himachal Pradesh has intensified monitoring of glacial lakes following repeated episodes of extreme rainfall, landslides and flash floods across the Himalayan region. Scientists have warned that warming temperatures can accelerate glacier retreat and contribute to the formation or expansion of unstable lakes held back by loose rock, ice or moraine material. The state is also examining satellite monitoring and field surveys to track changes in potentially dangerous lakes and improve evacuation planning for vulnerable settlements.
