Election Commission Condemns Arvind Sawant’s Remarks Against Shaina NC
The Election Commission of India (EC) has issued a strong warning to political leaders regarding derogatory comments directed at women. This comes after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant’s controversial remarks about BJP candidate Shaina NC sparked a political row.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasized that the EC would take strict action against any language that undermines the dignity of women in political discourse.
Controversy Over Arvind Sawant’s Comments
Sawant made the remarks in response to questions about Shaina’s candidacy for the Mumbadevi seat, currently held by Congress’ Amin Patel. Shaina, who recently joined the Shinde faction, condemned the remarks as “crass” and expressed pride in her Mumbai roots. “I am not some ‘maal’ (goods). I am a daughter of Mumbai,” she stated, highlighting her commitment to the city and calling out the opposition for lacking respect toward women.
Political Leaders React to the Incident
The incident drew reactions from various political figures, including Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena (UBT), who defended Sawant, saying the comments were not intended as an insult. However, Shaina criticized both Sawant and Amin Patel, who she claims reacted insensitively. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the issue, criticizing the Congress-led INDIA bloc, of which Shiv Sena (UBT) is a part, for their silence on the matter.
The EC has noted the incident and continues to monitor the situation closely, warning all parties to uphold respectful conduct during the election period. A police complaint has been filed against Sawant as the controversy unfolds.
