DMK Names Udhayanidhi As Opposition Leader

The DMK has elected Udhayanidhi Stalin as its legislature party leader, making him the Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly after the party lost power to Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

Udhayanidhi Stalin Named Opposition Leader

The decision was taken at a meeting of DMK MLAs held at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai. Udhayanidhi, who earlier served as Deputy Chief Minister in the previous DMK government, will now lead the party’s Assembly campaign against the new TVK government.

DMK also named senior leader K N Nehru as deputy legislature party leader, while E V Velu has been appointed as the party whip.

DMK Prepares For Assembly Face-Off With Vijay

Udhayanidhi’s appointment sets up a direct political contest with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, whose TVK defeated the DMK in the Assembly election. The two leaders are expected to be the main faces of Tamil Nadu’s ruling party and opposition benches.

The rivalry has gained attention because Vijay and Udhayanidhi were once seen as friendly public figures from Tamil cinema and politics, before their political paths sharply diverged.

Tamil Nadu Opposition Politics Enters New Phase

Udhayanidhi won from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni for a second consecutive term, giving him a stronger position inside the DMK despite the party’s wider electoral setback.

His new role comes as the Assembly prepares for the swearing-in of newly elected MLAs, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker elections, and the confidence vote for the Vijay-led government.

For the DMK, the appointment signals a generational shift and places Udhayanidhi at the centre of the party’s strategy to challenge TVK inside and outside the Assembly.
