Delhi Engulfed in Thick Fog as Air Quality Drops to ‘Poor’ Category
A thick layer of fog blanketed Delhi on Saturday, as the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) plummeted to 251, categorized as ‘Poor’ by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The worsening air quality has raised concerns, particularly in areas like Anand Vihar, where the AQI touched 334, placing it in the ‘Very Poor’ category.
Poor Air Quality Poses Health Risks
The CPCB warns that prolonged exposure to air classified as ‘Poor’ can cause breathing discomfort for most people, while air in the ‘Very Poor’ category can lead to respiratory illnesses, especially with extended exposure. Iconic locations such as India Gate have been impacted, as the capital’s deteriorating air quality affects daily life.
Delhi Government Enforces Pollution Control Measures
In response to the rising pollution levels, the Delhi government has activated the Graded Response Action Plan-1 (GRAP-1), aimed at mitigating the city’s air quality issues. Chief Minister Atishi led a high-level meeting on Tuesday with Environment Minister Gopal Rai and senior officials to coordinate efforts.
The government has deployed 99 teams to inspect construction sites to ensure dust control measures are followed. Over 300 anti-smog guns will be deployed across the city by various agencies, including the Public Welfare Department (PWD), the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Traffic management will also be enhanced with additional personnel assigned to congested areas, with Home Guards on standby.
Call for Public Cooperation
Chief Minister Atishi urged citizens to contribute to pollution control efforts by carpooling, refraining from burning crackers and waste, and reporting violations through the Green Delhi app. The government’s actions also include the removal of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, which contributes to rising PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels.
With Delhi’s air quality continuing to deteriorate, the government’s strict measures aim to curb pollution levels and protect the health of its residents.
