Cristiano Ronaldo Retires From Portugal at 41

Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, ending a remarkable 23-year career with the national team. The 41-year-old confirmed his decision on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through an emotional social media video, bringing an end to a career that included 234 appearances, 146 goals and three major international trophies.

Ronaldo Retires With Record 146 International Goals

Ronaldo made his Portugal debut in August 2003 and went on to become the most-capped player and highest goalscorer in men’s international football.

He represented Portugal at six FIFA World Cups and six European Championships, becoming the first player to score at six different World Cups.

His greatest international achievement came in 2016 when he captained Portugal to their first European Championship title. He subsequently helped the country win UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Ronaldo’s Retirement Follows Dispute With Portugal Coach

The announcement followed a disagreement with national team coach Jorge Jesus during September’s international fixtures.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp after being omitted from the starting lineup against Norway, prompting disciplinary action from the Portuguese Football Federation.

He subsequently received a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine.

Although Jesus had indicated that Ronaldo could return, the forward decided to end his international career.

Ronaldo to Continue Playing for Al Nassr

Ronaldo thanked his teammates, coaches, family and Portuguese supporters, describing representing his country as his greatest achievement.

The Portuguese Football Federation paid tribute to his contribution and announced plans to organise a special farewell event.

Ronaldo will continue playing club football for Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, where his contract runs until June 2027.

He remains within reach of 1,000 senior career goals, having scored approximately 985.
