Trump Says Ukraine Peace Deal Near After Russia Talks
US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that an agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine war could be reached soon following a private meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, at the White House on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Trump suggested that the proposed settlement could extend beyond Ukraine and involve broader European security arrangements, although he disclosed no specific terms.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said negotiations were progressing towards a potentially significant agreement involving Russia, Ukraine and other European countries.
The president declined to reveal details of his discussion with Dmitriev and confirmed that he had not met the Ukrainian delegation visiting Washington that day.
His remarks came ahead of US-mediated trilateral negotiations scheduled in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11.
Melania Trump Hosts Russian and Ukrainian Officials
Earlier, First Lady Melania Trump hosted representatives from Russia and Ukraine to recognise a humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town in Ukraine’s Kherson region.
The six-day truce, observed between October 27 and November 1, enabled the evacuation of nearly 800 civilians and the delivery of essential food and medical supplies.
Participants included Dmitriev, Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova, Ukrainian parliamentary leader David Arakhamia and Ukraine’s human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets.
Ukraine Peace Efforts Focus on Wider European Security
Melania Trump urged both countries to build on the humanitarian agreement and pursue a lasting settlement.
She presented personal letters addressed to Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy recognised her contribution by sending the Order of Princess Olga, a Ukrainian state decoration.
Despite Trump’s optimism, significant differences remain over territorial arrangements and security guarantees.
The upcoming Abu Dhabi negotiations will provide another opportunity to examine whether renewed diplomatic engagement can produce a broader peace agreement.
