PM Modi Says Wars Cannot Be Solved on Battlefield At SCO Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek that wars and conflicts cannot be resolved on the battlefield, calling instead for dialogue and diplomacy amid continuing fighting in Ukraine and the Middle East.
PM Modi Calls for Dialogue Over War
Addressing SCO leaders on September 1, Modi said lasting solutions to conflicts must come through diplomatic engagement rather than prolonged military confrontation.
His remarks came as the Russia-Ukraine war continues and the conflict involving Iran has disrupted global energy routes and added to economic uncertainty.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping were among the leaders present during Modi’s address.
Modi Rejects Double Standards on Terrorism
The Prime Minister also delivered a strong message on terrorism, saying SCO members must speak with one voice and reject double standards while confronting extremist threats.
Modi said the entire terrorism ecosystem must be dismantled, including financing networks, recruitment mechanisms, radicalisation and safe havens.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was present at the summit as Modi made the remarks. India has consistently argued that cross-border terrorism cannot be separated from broader regional cooperation and security.
SCO Summit Focuses on Security and Stability
The Bishkek summit brings together leaders from major Eurasian powers to discuss terrorism, regional security, connectivity, trade and economic cooperation.
India has positioned its SCO engagement around security, connectivity and opportunity while stressing that stronger regional economic ties require stability and respect for sovereignty.
Modi’s remarks also reinforce India’s longstanding position that diplomatic dialogue should remain central to resolving international conflicts, even as New Delhi maintains strategic relationships with countries on different sides of major geopolitical disputes.
