CJI Declines Rahul-Kharge Meeting on SIR Row

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has declined a request to meet Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge on October 12, saying the issues they intended to raise are already before the Supreme Court and should be pursued through the judicial process.

CJI Declines Meeting With INDIA Bloc Leaders

Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had sought a meeting with the Chief Justice to discuss concerns over alleged suppression of democratic rights, police action during recent protests and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

The CJI’s office said the request was declined “with reasons” and that a formal response had been sent to Gandhi’s official email.

The meeting had reportedly been expected between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on October 12.

Sub Judice Matters Cited as Key Reason

The Chief Justice is understood to have said that the issues the opposition leaders wanted to discuss are already sub judice before the Supreme Court.

He also indicated that the Court cannot intervene in matters concerning governance or executive functioning through its administrative side.

Opposition leaders were instead told that questions involving fundamental rights and other legal grievances could be raised before the Court on its judicial side.

Supreme Court Already Hearing Related Petitions

The development comes as petitions connected to the anti-CEC protests and the October 10 security clampdown remain before the Supreme Court.

Rahul Gandhi had said the opposition intended to raise demands including a halt to the electoral roll revision process and the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The CJI’s decision keeps those disputes firmly within the formal judicial process rather than private discussions with political leaders.
