Musk Promises Affordable Starlink Ahead of Jio IPO
Elon Musk has promised to make Starlink affordable in India as he intensifies his challenge to Reliance Jio, days before the telecom giant’s parent company prepares for what is expected to be India’s largest-ever initial public offering.
Musk Promises Affordable Starlink Pricing in India
Musk said SpaceX would have to price Starlink competitively because Indian consumers already enjoy some of the cheapest mobile data rates in the world.
He argued that competition would benefit consumers by increasing choice, while acknowledging that stronger competition could reduce Reliance Jio’s profits.
Musk has not yet disclosed specific India pricing for Starlink.
Starlink and Jio Await Final Security Clearance
Both Starlink and Jio’s satellite venture are awaiting final security approvals before they can begin full commercial satellite broadband services in India.
The Indian government has rejected Musk’s claims that Starlink is being deliberately delayed to protect Reliance, saying all satellite operators are being processed under the same regulatory framework.
Musk has nevertheless escalated his criticism in recent days, directly targeting Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani and accusing powerful business interests of blocking Starlink’s entry.
Jio IPO Adds Fresh Commercial Context
The confrontation comes just days before Jio Platforms is expected to launch an IPO targeting a valuation of around $106 billion.
Jio built its dominance in India through aggressively priced mobile data, a strategy Musk has also used in other markets to expand Starlink adoption.
India remains one of the world’s most attractive telecom markets because of its huge subscriber base, low data costs and growing demand for connectivity in remote and underserved areas.
