Chief Justice Surya Kant Heckled At London Event

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s lecture in London was disrupted after some attendees raised questions during the event, prompting the Indian High Commission in London to condemn what it described as “indecorous audience behaviour.”

Chief Justice Surya Kant was speaking at Birkbeck College in London on June 4, where he delivered a lecture on “Artificial Intelligence and International Law.” The event focused on the growing role of technology in governance, judicial systems, public administration and international legal frameworks.

During the question-and-answer session, some attendees raised questions linked to alleged suppression of dissent in India and also referred to the Chief Justice’s recent “cockroach” remark.

Indian High Commission Condemns Heckling

The Indian High Commission in London criticised the disruption and said such conduct was unacceptable at a formal public event. It said differences of opinion must be expressed in a civil and respectful manner.

The organisers interrupted the questions, saying they were outside the scope of the event’s theme, which was focused on artificial intelligence and international law. Videos from the event later circulated widely on social media.

Chief Justice On AI And International Law

In his lecture, CJI Surya Kant said artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept but an operational reality affecting governance, commerce, warfare, communication and judicial power.

He stressed that technological power must remain accountable to constitutional values, democratic legitimacy and human dignity. He also said decisions made in the current decade would shape the future relationship between technology, power, freedom and justice.
