Centre Signs Assam-Nagaland Oil Pact

The Centre has signed a major agreement with Assam and Nagaland to restart and expand oil and gas exploration in the Northeast. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the pact would help boost hydrocarbon production, attract investment and support India’s wider push for energy security.

Assam Nagaland Oil Exploration Agreement

The agreement was signed between the Centre, Assam and Nagaland to resolve long-pending issues related to oil and gas exploration along areas connected to both states. The move is expected to allow fresh exploration and production activity in hydrocarbon-rich zones.

Amit Shah said the agreement would help unlock energy resources in the region and strengthen cooperation between the two neighbouring states. The pact is also expected to create new economic opportunities in the Northeast.

Northeast Hydrocarbon Production Boost

The Northeast has significant oil and natural gas reserves, but exploration has often been affected by administrative, boundary and security-related challenges. The latest agreement is aimed at removing such hurdles and creating a more stable framework for energy companies.

The Centre has been pushing to increase domestic oil and gas production to reduce dependence on imports. Officials said improved coordination between Assam and Nagaland could help revive stalled projects and support long-term energy planning.

Amit Shah On Energy Security

Amit Shah described the agreement as an important step towards India’s energy self-reliance. He said the pact would not only support oil exploration but also contribute to development, employment and investment in the Northeast.

The agreement comes as the government continues to focus on infrastructure, peace and economic integration in the region. With exploration expected to restart in key areas, the pact could become a significant boost for India’s hydrocarbon sector.
