BMC Suspends 4 Officials After Manhole Death
Mumbai’s civic body has suspended four officials after a man died after falling into an open stormwater drain in Sakinaka during heavy rain and ongoing drainage maintenance work, triggering public anger over monsoon safety lapses.
Mumbai Manhole Tragedy Sparks BMC Action
The incident took place on Khairani Road in Sakinaka, where civic repair and drain maintenance work was underway. The victim reportedly fell into an open manhole or stormwater drain and was swept away amid heavy rainfall and waterlogging in the area.
The accident led to sharp criticism of safety arrangements at civic work sites, especially during Mumbai’s monsoon season when open drains and waterlogged roads pose serious risks to pedestrians.
Four BMC Officials Suspended
Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide ordered the suspension of four officials pending an inquiry. Those suspended include Dhanaji Herlekar, Assistant Commissioner of L Ward; Deepak Chougule, Assistant/Deputy Engineer (Maintenance), L Ward; Abhijit Chougule, Junior Engineer (Maintenance), L Ward; and Uttam Patil, Assistant Engineer in the Sewerage Operations Department.
The civic body has also initiated further action against the contractor involved in the work. Officials said responsibility will be fixed after the inquiry examines whether safety barricades, warning signs and supervision were properly in place.
Mumbai Monsoon Safety Under Scrutiny
The tragedy has renewed questions over civic preparedness during heavy rains, particularly around open manholes, drain cleaning and road excavation work. Residents have demanded stricter accountability to prevent similar incidents.
The BMC has directed officials to inspect manholes and drainage work sites across the city and ensure that all vulnerable spots are properly covered, barricaded and monitored during the monsoon.
