A black bear that triggered concern in Japan’s Utsunomiya city has been captured after several days of sightings, ending a search that led authorities to shut all municipal primary and middle schools for safety.
Japan Black Bear Captured In Utsunomiya
The bear was caught after being spotted multiple times in and around Utsunomiya, located north of Tokyo. Authorities had launched a search involving police, hunters and local officials after the animal was seen near residential and public areas.
The captured bear was estimated to weigh around 100 kg. Officials tranquilised the animal and removed it from the area, though its final destination had not been immediately decided.
Utsunomiya Schools Closed After Bear Sightings
The sightings caused major disruption in the city, with all 94 municipal primary and middle schools closed for two consecutive days. The decision was taken as a precaution after the bear was seen near areas used by students and residents.
Local authorities had urged people to stay indoors, keep doors and windows secure, and avoid approaching the animal if spotted.
Japan Bear Encounters Raise Safety Concerns
The Utsunomiya incident comes amid rising concern over bear encounters in Japan. Officials have reported a sharp increase in sightings and attacks, with experts linking the trend to changing food availability, climate conditions and rural depopulation.
Japan has also formed a government task force to address the growing number of human-bear encounters. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring vulnerable areas as bears move closer to human settlements in search of food.
