Bengal Prepares for Cyclonic Storm, Schools Closed Oct 23-26
West Bengal is on high alert as a potential severe cyclonic storm approaches the state, prompting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to announce the closure of schools in nine districts from October 23 to 26 as a precautionary measure.
The state administration has ramped up preparations to handle any disaster caused by the storm, with integrated control rooms operating 24/7 at both state and district levels.
Disaster Response Teams Deployed Across Bengal
In preparation for the cyclone, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have already been deployed in vulnerable areas. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and public address systems have been set up in coastal regions to alert residents. District magistrates and police superintendents have been instructed to stay vigilant until the storm passes.
Cyclonic Storm Expected to Make Landfall Near Puri or Sagar Island
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on Tuesday, with expectations that it could strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm. The storm is predicted to make landfall between Puri and Sagar Island, bringing wind speeds exceeding 110 km per hour.
Chief Minister Banerjee assured citizens that the government is fully prepared for the storm. “Our control rooms are operational around the clock to ensure swift responses to any emergencies,” she said, emphasizing the state’s readiness to face the cyclone and its potential impacts.
