Bengal Census To Begin On August 1

The first phase of the Census exercise in West Bengal will begin on August 1, with self-enumeration scheduled from August 1 to 15. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the state had fallen behind other regions and blamed the previous Mamata Banerjee government for delaying the required notification.

Bengal Census Self-Enumeration From August 1

The Census process in Bengal will begin with self-enumeration, allowing residents to submit details digitally before door-to-door data collection begins. The exercise is part of the national Census 2027 process, which is being conducted in two phases across the country.

The first phase in Bengal will cover self-enumeration and preparatory work before population enumeration takes place in February next year.

Suvendu Adhikari Blames Mamata Government

Suvendu Adhikari said Bengal was lagging because the previous government had not issued the notification required for the Census exercise. He said the new government issued the notification on May 11, two days after taking oath on May 9.

Adhikari said the Census is a constitutional obligation and urged people to participate in the process, saying the data is important for planning government schemes and development programmes.

Population Enumeration In February

The population enumeration phase in Bengal is expected to take place in February, after the first phase is completed. The state government is also preparing administrative arrangements for the exercise, including coordination with principal Census officers.

The Census data will be important for governance, welfare planning, resource allocation and future policy decisions. The exercise is being carried out after a long delay, as the national Census schedule was earlier disrupted and postponed.
