Ben Stokes Dropped From England Squad
England Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have been left out of the squad for the second Test against New Zealand as the England and Wales Cricket Board investigates an alleged nightclub incident.
Ben Stokes Dropped From England Squad
The ECB confirmed that Stokes and Atkinson have not been made available for selection for the second Test against New Zealand. The decision comes amid an ongoing investigation into an alleged breach of team protocols after the first Test at Lord’s.
Reports claimed that Stokes and Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours after England’s 115-run win over New Zealand. The incident is alleged to have taken place on Sunday night, following the conclusion of the opening Test.
Joe Root Named Interim England Captain
Senior batter Joe Root has been named interim captain for the second Test in Stokes’ absence. The match will be played at The Oval from June 17 to June 21.
Root, one of England’s most experienced players, will lead the side while the investigation continues. The ECB has not confirmed whether Stokes’ absence will extend beyond the second Test.
England Add Jofra Archer And Jordan Cox
England have added Sussex fast bowler Jofra Archer and Essex batter Jordan Cox to the squad. Their inclusion gives England additional options as the team prepares for the second Test without its regular captain and Atkinson.
The ECB has so far limited its public comments to confirming the investigation and squad changes. Further action, if any, is expected to depend on the outcome of the inquiry into the alleged nightclub incident.
