Bangladesh steady innings after Akash Deep double strike on rain hit Day 1

Bangladesh – 107/3 (Mominul 40*) v India
Day 1, Second Test, Kanpur

Rain and bad light brought a premature end to the first day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh on Friday with the visitors managing a score of 107 for three in the 35 overs possible.

Toss and Team line up:

With rain and overcast conditions expected for most part of the first three days, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first. The last time India won the toss and decided to field first at home was in 2015 in Bengaluru. This was also the first time since 2019, India went with an unchanged line up in two successive Test. Incidentally, the previous case was also against Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh made two changes with Taijul Islam and Khaled Ahmed coming in.

India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

Bangladesh: Shadman Islam, Zakir Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto(c), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das(w), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed

Akash Deep’s double strike pegs Bangladesh back

With overcast conditions in play, both the openers India were desperate for early breakthroughs but Bangladesh managed to negate the first eight overs from Jasprit Bumrah and Moahammad Siraj with Shadman Islam scoring all the runs that came off the bat. With less success in most part of the first hour, Rohit turned to Ravichandran Ashwin early in the 9th over as compared to the previous game.

The wicket though came from the other end when Deep bowled a full delivery on the off which Hasan nicked and was scooped by Yashasvi Jaiswal. The catch was referred to the third umpire which went in favour of the hosts. With the pressure on Bangladesh, Deep once again proved the wrecker in chief as he trapped Islam lbw which India reviewed successfully leaving them reeling at 29/2.

Najmul Hossain Shanto showed great intent from the start and also survived a couple of edges and close lbw appeal. With Bumrah returning for his second spell, Mominul Haque also survived a tight lbw appeal which went with umpire’s call when India reviewed in the 19th over. The duo managed to stich a 45 run partnership to take Bangladesh to 74/2 by the end of the opening session.

India struck early in the second half when Ashwin trapped Bangladesh skipper Shanto leg before wicket but Mominul and Mushfiqur Rahim ensured there were no further causalities helping the side to 107 for three before rain and bad light brought a premature end to the day’s play.
