Antonio Guterres Condemns Deadly Russian Strikes on Kyiv
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the latest Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, calling attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure a clear violation of international humanitarian law. The latest assault on Kyiv killed at least 17 people and caused widespread damage.
Guterres Condemns Russian Strikes on Kyiv
Guterres expressed deep concern over the escalation of long-range attacks across the Russia-Ukraine war, warning that civilians are increasingly being caught in deadly strikes.
The UN chief said the latest Russian attacks followed an alarming pattern of strikes on populated areas, resulting in rising civilian casualties and extensive destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure.
He stressed that attacks against civilians and civilian facilities must stop immediately.
UN Calls for Immediate Ukraine Ceasefire
Guterres renewed his call for urgent de-escalation and a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine.
He called for a just, sustainable and comprehensive peace based on international law, the UN Charter and relevant United Nations resolutions.
The UN Secretary-General also condemned recent Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russia that reportedly caused civilian casualties and damaged civilian infrastructure.
Ukraine Civilian Death Toll Continues Rising
The UN has confirmed that nearly 1,400 Ukrainian civilians were killed and almost 8,000 injured by Russian attacks during the first six months of 2026.
Around 10.8 million people across Ukraine currently require humanitarian assistance, while approximately 3.8 million remain internally displaced.
Guterres also warned that escalating military activity in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov threatens commercial navigation and global food supplies.
