China-Japan Tensions Rise Over Defence Report
Japan has renewed its warning over China’s growing military power, describing Beijing’s activities as its “greatest strategic challenge” in its 2026 defence white paper. China has strongly rejected the assessment and lodged a formal protest with Tokyo, deepening tensions between the two Asian powers.
Japan Calls China Greatest Strategic Challenge
Japan’s defence report highlights China’s expanding military activities around Taiwan, the East China Sea and the wider Pacific.
Tokyo said Beijing continues to strengthen its naval, air, missile and nuclear capabilities while increasing military operations near Japanese territory. Japan has used similar language about China in recent defence assessments, with the 2026 report reinforcing this strategic position.
Japan is also expanding its own defence capabilities, including long-range missiles, drones and other unmanned systems as part of its largest military buildup in decades.
China Rejects Japan Defence Report
Beijing accused Tokyo of exaggerating the threat posed by China and making inappropriate comments about Taiwan.
China maintains that Taiwan is an internal matter and has repeatedly warned Japan against becoming involved in any potential conflict across the Taiwan Strait.
Chinese officials have also criticised Japan’s expanding military capabilities, arguing that Tokyo is moving away from the restrained defence posture adopted after World War II.
