Anant Ambani Offers To Relocate Colombia Hippos
Anant Ambani has urged the Colombian government to reconsider its plan to kill 80 hippopotamuses in the Magdalena River basin, offering to relocate the animals to Vantara in Gujarat. The proposal seeks to provide a humane alternative to Colombia’s population-control plan for the invasive hippos.
Anant Ambani Offers Colombia Hippo Relocation
Anant Mukesh Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries and Founder of Vantara, has formally appealed to Colombia to stop the planned killing of 80 hippos. He has offered scientific, operational and financial support for their safe capture, transfer and lifelong care at Vantara.
The animals are descendants of hippos originally brought to Colombia by drug lord Pablo Escobar in the 1980s. After Escobar’s death, the hippos multiplied in the wild and spread across the Magdalena River basin.
Colombia Faces Invasive Hippo Crisis
Colombia has been trying to control the growing hippo population, which is now estimated to be close to 200. Authorities have warned that the animals are damaging ecosystems, threatening native species and creating risks for local communities.
Previous methods, including sterilisation and relocation to zoos, have proved difficult, expensive and insufficient. The government’s approval of lethal control for 80 hippos has triggered concern among animal welfare groups.
Vantara Proposes Humane Wildlife Solution
Vantara has proposed a scientifically guided relocation plan involving veterinary supervision, specialised transport and long-term habitat care in India. The offer includes covering the cost and logistics of the translocation.
The Colombian government has not yet announced a final response to the proposal. If accepted, the relocation would be one of the most complex international wildlife transfers involving hippos.
