Rijiju said the government was willing to discuss issues connected with the student agitation and the police response. He asked Opposition parties, including Congress, to hear the Home Minister’s statement rather than disrupt proceedings when the government responds.
The assurance marks a shift in the parliamentary standoff, with Opposition parties repeatedly demanding that Shah personally address questions surrounding police action against protesters.
Opposition Demands Answers on Police Action
Congress and other Opposition parties have sought explanations over allegations involving the use of pellet guns during student protests in Delhi and firearms during protests in Bihar.
Rahul Gandhi has accused the government of failing to investigate alleged excessive force against students and questioned who authorised the police response. The allegations have become a major flashpoint during the Monsoon Session.
Parliament Deadlock Continues Over Protests
The controversy stems from demonstrations over examination irregularities, including a major protest in Delhi on July 20 that resulted in clashes between protesters and security personnel.
Repeated Opposition protests over the issue have disrupted parliamentary proceedings, with demands centred on accountability for the police response.
The government’s willingness to have Amit Shah address the matter could now provide an opportunity to break the impasse, provided both sides agree on how the debate will be conducted.
