Air India Aborts Take-Off In Mumbai
An Air India flight from Mumbai to Delhi aborted its take-off run at Mumbai airport after an Air India Express aircraft had not yet cleared the active runway, averting a possible runway safety incident.
Mumbai Airport Runway Incident
The incident took place at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on July 7 when Air India flight AI816 was preparing to depart for Delhi. The aircraft discontinued its take-off run after receiving instructions from Air Traffic Control.
An Air India Express aircraft, which had landed from Siliguri, was reportedly still on the runway at the time. No injuries were reported and both aircraft remained safe.
Air India Flight Aborts Take-Off
Air India said the crew operating AI816 followed ATC instructions and returned to the bay after aborting the take-off. The aircraft was scheduled to be operated using a Boeing 777-300ER.
The airline said the aircraft would undergo required checks as per standard operating procedures. Alternative arrangements were being made for passengers to continue their journey to Delhi.
ATC Runway Safety Under Review
The incident has raised questions over runway coordination at one of India’s busiest airports. Runway separation is a critical safety requirement, especially when one aircraft is landing or vacating the runway while another is cleared for departure.
Aviation authorities are expected to examine how the two aircraft came to be involved in the same runway sequence. The quick intervention by ATC and response from the pilots helped prevent escalation.
The case is likely to bring renewed attention to airport ground movement safety, runway occupancy monitoring and air traffic control procedures at high-density airports.
