AIADMK Faction Extends Support To TVK
A faction of the AIADMK led by C.V. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani has announced support to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led government in Tamil Nadu, adding a major twist to the state’s post-election politics.
AIADMK Faction Backs TVK Government
The Shanmugam-Velumani faction said it had decided to support the ruling TVK after reviewing the AIADMK’s repeated electoral setbacks over the past decade. Shanmugam said the party needed to discuss its future and focus on revival after losing multiple elections, including the latest Assembly contest.
The faction leaders are expected to meet Chief Minister Vijay, whose party emerged as the single-largest force in Tamil Nadu but fell short of a simple majority.
Shanmugam Rejects DMK Alliance Proposal
C.V. Shanmugam criticised AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami over discussions linked to forming a government with DMK support to stop TVK from taking power. He said such a move would go against the AIADMK’s political foundation, as the party was created in opposition to the DMK.
The rebel faction said backing TVK was a better option than entering into any arrangement with the DMK.
Tamil Nadu Politics Faces AIADMK Split Tension
S.P. Velumani said the move should not be seen as a breakaway from the AIADMK and added that the group would wait for the “right” decision from the party leadership. The faction has also called for the AIADMK to end ties with the BJP.
The development has triggered fresh activity within the AIADMK, with leaders loyal to Palaniswami rushing to meet him amid growing signs of internal strain.
